Overview

Y-GIG Bus Drivers are responsible for safely operating Y-GIG buses and/or commercial vehicles, maintaining order at all times within the vehicle, and providing for the transportation needs of Y-GIG. Y-GIG Bus Drivers as commercial motor vehicle operators are responsible for all activities related to the bus, including but not limited to maintaining safety as a priority at all times, attending driver any training/meetings, inspecting the bus and completing the required documentation, and maintaining the vehicle (fluid levels, visual tire checks, gas levels, etc.). Y-GIG Bus Drivers will also serve as support staff with our students while attending their offsite programs in the community.

Responsibilities

  • Ensure the safety of passengers (i.e. students, coordinators, volunteers) at all times while in a Foundation YMCA vehicle
    ○ Maintain the order and discipline of passengers.
    ○ Instruct riders regarding being responsible passengers.
    ○ Read, adhere to, and ensure enforcement of bus rules and communicate them positively and effectively to all passengers.
    ○ Communicate with the supervisor regarding potential hazards, injuries, concerns, issues, and/or incidents that arise on the bus that may require follow-up or investigation.
    ○ Keep windows, aisles, seats, and mirrors clean and free of obstructions.
    ○ Exercise extreme caution during the loading and unloading of passengers.
    ○ Taking steps to prevent unauthorized individuals from entry on the bus.
    ○ Remain alert and give full attention to traffic, weather, and road conditions at all times while driving. Do not distract yourself or others or allow yourself to be distracted by conversations with or amongst others.
  • Obey all traffic laws, regulations, and procedures.
  • Assist with other routes when a breakdown or other unusual circumstances occur as assigned.
  • Travel established routes and designated stops without deviation unless expressly approved by the supervisor or the exempt-level designee.
  • Notifies the supervisor or the exempt-level designee of any delays in scheduled time, providing approximate delay time and reason.
  • Possess knowledge and ability to think, act and react quickly; remain poised and composed under stressful circumstances and be able to manage emergency situations; work independently, follow standardized practices and exercise extreme caution and sound judgment while operating a school bus.
  • Maintain accurate pupil attendance records by:
    ○ Monitoring and documenting all students who load the bus at the designated
    feeder school.
    ○ Ensure students are released to an approved adult upon arrival back to feeder
    school.
  • Prepare and maintain accurate documentation (including but not limited to daily mileage and condition reports, pre-trip inspections, routine maintenance, and
    route and time schedules) to prove written support and/or convey accurate information.
  • Return bus to designated location (i.e. feeder school) clean and free of
    debris and belongings.
  • Communicate with the appropriate supervisor about any equipment needs.
  • Maintain equipment to ensure safety of participants by:
    ○ Identifying and immediately reporting expired, damaged, or defective equipment, maintenance, and/or mechanical repair requirements to the Transportation Coordinator or the exempt-level designee for timely follow-up.
    ○ Monitoring the condition of the interior and exterior of commercial vehicles
    and conducting pre-trip inspections.
    ○ Possess knowledge and ability to recognize mechanical safety hazards in and on a school bus.
  • Act as a role model in regards to promptness, manners, language, appearance and health.
  • Develops friendly and positive relationships with all constituents to include, but not limited to: staff, volunteers, parents, and children.
  • Suggest and initiate actions to improve the transportation program.
  • Completes all job related and other training as required.
  • Participates/attends any required staff meetings or events as needed.
  • Other duties and responsibilities assigned by the supervisor

Qualifications

  • High School Diploma or equivalent
  • Current (valid) driver's license
  • Clean DMV driving record
  • MUST have a "P" and School Bus Endorsements on Driver's License
  • MUST have a valid medical card or be willing and able to submit to a medical examination for commercial driver fitness determination.
  • Must stay current in CPR/AED/O2 and First Aid certifications.
  • Experience transporting children (i.e. bus driver, after school driver, etc.)-required
  • Experience working with children (i.e. teacher assistant, after school support staff, etc.)-preferred
  • Pass a background check to allow you to work with children
    Additional Details:
  • Must be able to report to the designated feeder school site by 3:00 pm to prepare for student dismissal.
  • Middle schools dismiss at 3:30 pm
  • Approximately 20 hours per week (4 hours per day)
  • Monday-Friday

Posted Salary Range

USD $15.00 - USD $20.00 /Hr.
